Sr. Copywriter, Sherwood Medical Company (10 yrs.)

Our department had terrific relationships with our scores of internal clients. This global company sometimes felt like a small, family-run business.

Favorite part of job: Terrific boss gave me lots of autonomy and support from day one.

Second favorite part of job: Writing, directing and producing comic live-action and video presentations for annual sales meetings.

Copywriter, Walgreens Co. (2½ yrs.)

At the time I didn’t think writing two-lines-of-text-22-characters-per-line-including-spaces could improve my writing skills, but it did.

Favorite part of job: Working on special projects with senior designers.

Least favorite part of job: Monstrous commute.

Assistant Editor, Florists’ Review weekly magazine (2 yrs.)

Our small staff turned in a great team effort every week – writing news and features, taking photos, and laying out the magazine. Didn’t get paid much, but learned a lot.

Best day on the job: My second week entire staff worked like crazy to finish a 200-page buyers’ guide and Editor rewarded us with a pizza and champagne lunch.

Greatest lesson learned: Editing a columnist is way different than editing news or features, because it’s imperative to maintain the author's distinct voice.

Worst part of job: Lack of job-tracking software.

Copywriter, St. Louis Post-Dispatch (4½ yrs.)

Wrote marketing materials to raise awareness of newspaper content, increase circulation, and promote Newspapers In Education program.

Favorite part of job: Teaming up with outstanding designers.

Collaboration is Key

The key to crafting compelling stories about people, products and ideas is born from a genuine interest in my subjects. The more engaged and invested I am in a project, the greater the likelihood that the audience will be, too.
